Kraig Biocraft Laboratories completes Final Facilities Review for First Batch of Recombinant Spider Silk Production in Vietnam

ANN ARBOR, Mich., – January 3, 2018 –Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. (OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company”), the leading developer of spider silk based fibers, announces today that key members of its management and production team have laid the groundwork for the Company’s Vietnamese spider silk production initiative.

Working through an MOU, announced in November, the Company is collaborating with the Institute of Biotechnology – Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (“IBT”) and Vietnam Sericulture Research Centre (“VSRC”) to rear and test the first ever recombinant spider silk silkworms in Vietnam.  The Kraig Labs team, in partnership with its subsidiary, Prodigy Textiles Co Ltd., held a series of meetings with senior members of the IBT and the VSRC to outline the project requirements and to review the facilities selected to raise the first batch of transgenic silkworms.

The Kraig Labs team visited the IBT headquarters and brand new satellite location, where the team members reviewed IBT’s laboratory capabilities and discussed possible future collaborative research efforts.

The team also spent time at the VSRC headquarters reviewing their rearing processes, discussing the details of the Company’s transgenic silkworms, and outlining requirements for hatching the Company’s silkworms.

The Company’s technology is designed to work hand-in-glove with existing silk production infrastructure, of which and is why the Company focused its efforts in Vietnam because of the existing infrastructure and history of silk manufacturing, which would theoretically allow for very rapid expansion of production.  With everything in place, Kraig Labs’ team believes that the Company is the verge of a major breakthrough in the commercialization of spider silk.

“The silk experts of the VSRC, working in partnership with members of our Prodigy Textiles team, will give our expansion in Vietnam a strong foundation,” said COO Jon Rice.  “That expertise, combined with IBT’s facilities and capabilities, should pave the way to success, for this first of its kind effort, and translate into a smooth production scale up.”

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories begins scale up of second generation Dragon Silk

ANN ARBOR, Mich., – November 7, 2018 –Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. (OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company”), the leading developer of spider silk based fibers, announces today that it has begun the scale up of its recently announced second generation Dragon Silk.

Consistent with the Company’s history of creating performance driven recombinant spider silk, this new material was specially designed at Kraig Labs’ Michigan research headquarters for application in protective textiles, where increased strength and decreased flexibility are expected to provide improved protection.

Scale up of Dragon Silk 2.0 is well underway, with the production team already raising tens of thousands of the new transgenic silkworms at the Company’s US based pilot production facility.  Over the next 30 days, Kraig Labs anticipates scaling up production volumes of this new silkworm strain into the millions, as it prepares to create the first silk threads and fabrics made of this next generation recombinant spider silk.

Further, the Company is laying the groundwork to partner with experts in multicomponent thread design and spinning, to develop new specialty threads blending the performance spider silk with other traditional materials.  This work is expected to develop threads and fabrics focused specifically on products for the performance wear and other closely linked market segments.

“The ability to rapidly scale up this newly announced material, from initial testing to pilot scale production, is a major differentiator in our approach, which utilizes silkworms and the existing global silk infrastructure,” said COO, Jon Rice.  “The current global infrastructure, equipment and skilled labor, is able to produce more than 150,000 metric tons of conventional silk per year. Our recombinant spider silk silkworm technology is a direct drop-in replacement for traditional silkworms and allows us to move quickly, with minimal investment, to bring new products to market.”

Future scale up of Dragon Silk 2.0, as well as the Company’s other lines of recombinant spider silk silkworms, is expected to be transferred to the Company’s subsidiary Prodigy Textiles and its operations in Vietnam, while the Company’s US facility remains focused on the development of next generation materials.

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories selects new high performance recombinant spider silk for delivery to US ARMY

ANN ARBOR, Mich., – October 30, 2018 –Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. (OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company”), the leading developer of spider silk based fibers, announces today that, working under its contract with the US ARMY (“Army”), it developed a strain of genetically engineered silkworms that better match the physical properties required for applications in protective textiles.

Tentatively called Dragon Silk 2.0; this new strain is the next evolution in the development of protective fibers, built upon the Company’s existing Dragon Silk, and is a further example of the Company’s ability to adapt and tailor the properties of its recombinant spider silk materials to meet end market performance requirements.  Through the use of its fiber performance testing capabilities, paired with a select breeding program, the Company created a strain that is stronger, yet less elastic, than the original Dragon Silk.

Specifically created in response to input from the Army, based on requirements for antiballistic applications, this new strain of recombinant spider silk silkworms is the second phase of the Company’s development agreement with the Army.  Kraig Labs delivered shootpack panels to the Army, earlier this summer, made of its original Dragon Silk material and those panels are awaiting testing.

“When the Army chose to award the second phase of this project we knew that we were given a great opportunity to prove the power of our technology and our approach using silkworms,” said COO, Jon Rice.  “Today we’re thrilled to announce that our work was a success and that we now have a line of silkworms that produce a recombinant spider silk better matched for the demands of protective textile applications.  We expect this new strain will play a critical role in our expansion and commercialization of spider silk far beyond the market for bullet proof vests.”

Over the next several months Kraig Labs plans to scale up the production of this new recombinant spider silk fiber at the Company’s domestic facility, in order to fulfil the second phase deliverables to the Army.

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories accelerates development of new recombinant Spider Silk Fibers

ANN ARBOR, Mich., – September 18, 2018 – Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. (OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company”), the leading developer of spider silk based fibers announces today that it has implemented two major advancements in the development of next generation recombinant spider silk fibers.

These advancements are the result of new equipment and recently employed protocols, at the Company’s R&D headquarters, based in Michigan.  These new approaches build on the existing protocols, but allow the Company to increase processing efficiency significantly.  The Company expects to see higher throughput as this approach should result in shorter times to generate new transgenics.  What previously took an entire day to complete can now be done in a matter of minutes.

The Company expects that, with these new methods, it will be able to drastically accelerate the pace of development for next generation recombinant spider silk fibers and technologies, but does not affect the opening of the Company’s aggressive production operations through its Vietnamese subsidiary, Prodigy Textiles.  The Company expects to provide an update on its progress at Prodigy Textiles in the near future.

“As we continue to make significant progress commercializing and scaling production of our existing recombinant spider silk offerings, our research team, led by Dr. Trevor Kane, remains focused on the creation of the next evolution of high performance spider silk materials,” said COO, Jon Rice.  “The new processes and equipment implemented today play a key role in that work, allowing for major increases in throughput and what we expect to be faster development cycles.”

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories delivers ballistic shootpack panels to U.S. Army

ANN ARBOR, Mich., – August 20, 2018 – Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. (OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company”), the leading developer of spider silk based fibers, announces today that it has delivered ballistic shootpack panels to the U.S. Army made from the Company’s proprietary Dragon Silk™ material.  These panels will be evaluated for effectiveness in stopping bullets, in an effort to provide our Warfighters with a lighter and more comfortable alternative to conventional protective apparel.

Dragon Silk is a genetically engineered spider silk which mimics the strength and toughness found in native spider silk, but which can be produced at large quantities through the Company’s specially developed silkworms.  These specially engineered silkworms were developed to be a direct drop-in replacement into the traditional silk production infrastructure which produces more than 150,000 metric tons of silk per year.  This approach of adapting the existing production infrastructure is the key differentiator between the Company and others working to produce spider silk materials.

Unlike traditional synthetic materials such as Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) polymers or aramids, which are very stiff, spider silk is extremely flexible, making it more comfortable and providing higher mobility and movement for the wearer.  Spider silk is also biocompatible, making it ideal for skin contact applications, and biodegradable, reducing the environmental burden of the current synthetic materials

“After years of research and investment, developing this ground breaking technology, we are very excited to now see it in the hands of the U.S. Army,” stated Jon Rice, COO.  “For me, personally, and for the Company, the opportunity to help protect the brave men and women whom dedicate themselves to our protection is a great honor.”

The Company continues to develop the next generation of high performance recombinant spider silk materials under the exercised contract option period authorized in 2017 and is currently in the process of opening a production facility in Vietnam to significantly expand its production capacity of Dragon Silk and its many other recombinant spider silk offerings.

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories reports Farming Cooperatives break ground in Vietnam

ANN ARBOR, Mich., – July 31, 2018 – Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. (OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company”), the leading developer of spider silk based fibers announces today that work has begun under the collaborative agreement signed between the Company and several farming cooperatives in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam.  As part of the agreement reported earlier this month, these farming cooperatives have now begun planting mulberry.  This mulberry is the key input for the Company’s newly formed subsidiary, Prodigy Textiles, its proprietary hybrid silkworms, and the commercialization of the Company’s recombinant spider silk materials.

Silkworms are voracious eaters, consuming more than 100 kilograms of mulberry leaves for every kilogram of finished silk produced.  For this reason, transportation logistics and local sourcing of mulberry are core to the Company’s strategic plan.  Under these agreements the Company expects that as many as 2,500 hectares (~6177 acres) of mulberry will be planted near the Company’s new factory, supporting Prodigy Textiles spider silk production for several years to come.

“Planting these mulberry fields means that we now able to support rearing our hybrid silkworms at Prodigy Textiles,” said Jon Rice, COO.  “Access to large quantities of fresh mulberry is a core piece of our production growth strategy and was a key element of our decision to select Vietnam for commercializing our spider silk technology.  The local farming cooperatives have the existing capacity to meet Prodigy’s mulberry needs over the coming months.  These additional plantings provide us with the confidence that we will be able to maitain our scale up plans for years to come, while also providing these farmers with sustaining and reliable income.”
