The World Leader in Spider Silk

From its founding, Kraig has been at the forefront of spider silk research, setting the standard for innovation and material development. All companies known to be developing spider silk entered the field after Kraig’s inception, after our creation of the world’s first transgenic silkworm producing recombinant spider silk, and after our landmark peer-reviewed publication describing our scientific breakthroughs in PNAS (Publication of the National Academy of Sciences). To date, we remain the first and only company to have published performance data on its recombinant spider silk. Of all companies in the industry today, we were literally the first to be formed, the first to publish and the first to create recombinant spider silk.

Kraig was also the first company in the world to create a transgenic silkworm producing recombinant spider silk. Our founder, Kim Thompson, and his team of molecular biologists invented this field and continue to lead the industry in both research and design of enhanced silk fibers in silkworm. Kraig also remains the first and only company in the world to field its transgenic silkworms for the production of naturally spun recombinant spider silk.

Our leadership extends beyond being the first across numerous metrics as we are continuously building on this legacy to stay ahead of the curve. In 2025, we are increasing both the scale of our spider silk production and the pace of our development of new materials through molecular biology. This work is designed to accelerate our path to the commercialization of spider silk while increasing our technological lead in the field.

Management believes that Kraig Biocraft Laboratories currently leads the world in the field of spider silk fibers. We are the only company producing naturally spun spider silk. The following list of achievements speaks for itself.

Long History as Industry Pioneers

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories is the inventor of its field, silkworm as the production platform for recombinant spider silk. Kraig is proud to continue this tradition of trailblazing in the spider silk industry through continuous advancements in science and production.

Revolutionary Genetic Engineering

Building on our successes in the spider silk sector, we are exploring exotic biological, non-spider fibers as a pathway to enhanced durability, strength, and elasticity in the next generation of advanced materials. Kraig has now created non-spider silk transgenics, ushering in a new era for the advanced fibers industry. We look forward to pushing the boundaries of the field even further as we continue to create new science.

Scalable & Cost-Effective Production

Our breakthrough technology allows for scalable and eco-conscious production of high-performance fibers. We are the first to achieve sustainable commercial production of naturally spun spider silk, leveraging existing silk infrastructure for large-scale production. Furthermore, Kraig’s approach to spider silk production has allowed us to be the first and only producer of naturally spun recombinant spider silk.

Superior Spider Silk Fibers

Kraig has developed multiple strains of recombinant spider silk, including Dragon Silk™, known for its strength, elasticity, and durability. We were also the first to create a multi-strain production hybrid system, expanding the possibilities of spider silk production and applications.

First to Achieve Commercial Scale Production of Spider Silk

We are the only company to successfully produce spider silk at a commercial scale using silkworms. Our facilities are being positioned to deliver sustainable and high-performance fibers to industries worldwide. In fact, the two largest companies that were viewed as our competitors, Bolt ProjectsTM and SpiberTM, have both dropped any reference to “spider silk.”

Advancing Sustainability & Bio-fabrication

Our bio-based production approach is environmentally friendly, offering a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based synthetic fibers. Kraig Biocraft is leading the movement toward biodegradable, high-performance materials.

Ongoing Research & Development

We continue to push the boundaries of biomaterial science, enhancing fiber strength, toughness, and production efficiency. Our research focuses on next-generation silk materials with even greater performance capabilities.
